2027 Flight 93 educator symposium

Program Overview

The inaugural 2026 Flight 93 Educator Symposium took place in June 2026 at Flight 93 National Memorial. The program was very successful and well received by the attending educators. We are thrilled to announce that this program will be back for 2027.

The 2027 Flight 93 National Memorial Educator Symposium will be an immersive, 2.5-day professional learning experience for K-12 history, social studies, and civics Educators from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This program will be a collaborative partnership with the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial, the National Park Service, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Education.

Selected Educators will engage in place-based learning and disciplined historical inquiry focused on the events of September 11, 2001, with particular attention to Flight 93, its historical context, and its national significance. The symposium emphasizes accurate content knowledge, analysis of primary sources and artifacts, and effective instructional strategies for teaching a defining event in modern U.S. history. Sessions support Educators with presenting this history clearly, responsibly, and with appropriate attention to student readiness.

Core Learning Experiences

  • Panel Discussion with Family members of the Flight 93 Passengers and Crew examining memories, legacy, and civic responsibility
  • Guided Learning Engagement with the Flight 93 National Memorial Museum Curator and staff, focused on artifact analysis and historical interpretation
  • Site-Based Learning with National Park Service (NPS) Rangers, emphasizing place-based instruction and historical contexts
  • Faculty-Led Sessions by the University of Pittsburgh School of Education addressing best practices for teaching difficult historical events

All workshop materials, overnight accommodations, and site-based meals will be fully covered for selected Educators.
